The Central Bank of Nicaragua published its Report on Payment Systems and Services for the fourth quarter of 2024, reporting increased payment activity across the country’s main payment systems, instruments and channels versus the same period in 2023. Across SINPE, UNIRED and SIPA, the report records 2.5 million transactions worth NIO 612,026.8 million, up 20% year on year in volume and 16.3% in value. SINPE transactions totalled NIO 475,573.0 million in value, up 13.6% year on year, while volume fell 13.8%; within SINPE, electronic funds transfers represented 49.7% of total value. UNIRED processed NIO 135,445.6 million across 1,820,944 operations, up 26.9% in value and 40.3% in number of operations, while SIPA recorded NIO 1,008.2 million across 2,162 transfers, up 51.6% in value and 50.5% in volume. The report also tracks broader payment instrument use, totalling 67.5 million operations worth NIO 1.3 trillion (up 19.2% in number and 11.4% in value), alongside higher outstanding stocks of payment cards (3.1 million, up 13.6%), electronic money accounts (403,775, up 25%) and digital wallet users (783,357, up 45.9%). Cash in circulation reached NIO 59,509.4 million, up 19.5% year on year, and total channel activity reached 77.5 million operations worth NIO 1.5 trillion, with in-person channels showing lower value but higher volumes, and remote channels posting growth in both value and volume.
