The Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority has announced that it will examine how Bankgirocentralen BGC AB, known as Bankgirot, complies with Sweden’s security protection regulatory framework. The review will focus on how Bankgirot has met the security protection requirements that apply ahead of entering into security protection agreements. The investigation sits within the authority’s 2025 supervisory focus on whether banks and financial firms can carry out their tasks in a more uncertain operating environment. Under its mandate to supervise firms conducting security-sensitive activities, the authority highlights requirements in the Security Protection Act to conclude security protection agreements where another party may gain access to security-sensitive operations, with the aim of maintaining equivalent protection regardless of where the activity is performed. Bankgirot is described as a clearing organisation with a key role in Sweden’s payments infrastructure, transmitting payments and payment information between payment system participants and their customers.
