The National Bank of Denmark has warned that demand is rising sharply ahead of the 31 May 2026 deadline to submit DKK 1000 banknotes and older banknotes at its three exchange points in Aarhus, Copenhagen and Odense. After that date, the DKK 1000 note from the current 2009 series and banknotes from the 1944, 1952, 1972 and 1997 series will be invalid and worthless. Since June 2025, these exchange points have been the only option in Denmark for submitting the notes, after they stopped being accepted in shops and could no longer be deposited at banks. The bank expects long queues and waiting times through the deadline. Individuals must appear in person with a digitally completed and printed submission form, physical photo identification and proof of address, with supplementary documentation required for larger amounts. Businesses are subject to separate documentation requirements. Nine days before the deadline, the three exchange points had processed more than 43,000 submissions and received more than DKK 200 million since opening in early December 2024. Total submissions since 30 November 2023 amounted to DKK 21.1 billion. In Greenland and the Faroe Islands, local banks can exchange the notes until 29 May 2026.
