The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued an alert after Shanghai Commercial Bank Limited published a notice about fraudulent websites and internet banking login screens that have been reported to the HKMA, with a link to the bank’s press release made available via the HKMA website. The HKMA reiterated that banks do not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing customers to bank websites to carry out transactions, and do not request sensitive personal information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS, including via embedded hyperlinks. Individuals who provided personal information or conducted financial transactions through, or in response to, the fraudulent websites or login screens were advised to contact the bank using the details in the bank’s press release and report the matter to the Police.
