Sveriges Riksbank announced that the administrative fee for redeeming invalid banknotes will rise to SEK 300 per application from SEK 200 for banknotes sent in after 1 September 2026. The central bank linked the change to administrative handling costs and noted that SEK 3.9 billion of invalid banknotes have remained missing since the 2015 to 2017 banknote and coin changeover. The update concerns invalid banknotes that can still be redeemed through application. Separately, Sveriges Riksbank has launched a consultation on a proposal to stop redeeming banknotes that have been invalid for more than 10 years in 2027.
