The Hong Kong Monetary Authority published a public alert following Chong Hing Bank Limited’s report of a fraudulent website and a fake internet banking login screen, with a link to the bank’s press release made available via the HKMA website. The HKMA reminded customers that banks will not send SMS messages or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing users to bank websites to carry out transactions, and will not request sensitive personal information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS, including through embedded links. Customers who have provided personal information or conducted transactions via the fraudulent channels were advised to contact the bank using details in the bank’s press release and report the matter to the Police.
