National Bank of Moldova Governor Anca Dragu held a bilateral meeting in Brussels with Gert Jan Koopman, Director-General of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Enlargement and Eastern Neighbourhood (DG ENEST), focusing on Moldova’s participation in the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) and broader EU-accession preparation work. Discussions covered implementation of European Commission recommendations, alignment of national legislation with EU law and international standards, and Moldova’s macroeconomic and financial system outlook. Dragu pointed to early payment-market impacts, stating that within three months seven out of ten euro transfers are now processed via SEPA rather than SWIFT, with transfer costs down by more than 90%, generating savings of millions of euros for the national economy; the meeting also addressed opportunities for EU technical assistance and the assessment of the equivalence of Moldova’s banking prudential framework with the EU framework under the European Banking Authority methodology.
