The National Bank of Ethiopia has removed the requirement that export permits for goods destined for China be processed only through the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia. Effective May 26, 2026, all licensed commercial banks in Ethiopia may issue export permits, manage documentary credits and handle related banking transactions for exports to the People’s Republic of China. The change reverses an earlier direction issued under the general economic and financial cooperation agreement between Ethiopia and China. Banks are expected to provide these services to clients in line with existing foreign exchange and export regulations.
