The Bank of Portugal published updated general government financing statistics through December 2024, showing EUR 3.1bn of financing in 2024 compared with EUR -10.6bn in 2023. It also announced that it is discontinuing the statistical information note that accompanied these data. In 2024, the rest of the world financed general government by EUR 7.2bn, mainly through debt securities. Over the same period, general government financed banks by EUR 3.5bn, largely reflecting higher deposits and a reduction in public debt securities, and financed other resident sectors by EUR 0.6bn, notably as households reduced investment in Treasury certificates and increased investment in savings certificates. By instrument, net issuance of debt securities accounted for EUR 3.2bn, while loans net of deposits totalled EUR -0.1bn.
