The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued an alert following a Shanghai Commercial Bank Limited press release on fraudulent websites and internet banking login screens that have been reported to the HKMA. The HKMA reminded the public that banks will not send SMS or emails containing embedded hyperlinks directing customers to bank websites to carry out transactions, and will not ask for sensitive personal information such as login passwords or One-Time Passwords by phone, email or SMS, including via embedded hyperlinks. Anyone who provided personal information or carried out financial transactions through the fraudulent sites or login screens is advised to contact the bank using the contact information in the bank’s press release and report the matter to the Hong Kong Police Force’s Crime Wing Information Centre.
