The Bank of Mauritius has completed its 2026 assessment of domestic systemically important banks and confirmed that the four banks identified in 2025 retain that classification. They are The Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd, SBM Bank (Mauritius) Ltd, Absa Bank (Mauritius) Limited and AfrAsia Bank Limited. The assessment applies the central bank’s methodology for determining systemic importance and the resulting capital surcharge. It initially covers banks whose domestic or resident assets equal at least 3.5% of gross domestic product at market prices, then evaluates their size, exposure to large groups, interconnectedness, complexity and substitutability.
