The South African Reserve Bank published its monthly statement of assets and liabilities as of Aug. 31, 2026, showing total assets of ZAR 1.280 trillion, up ZAR 6.84 billion from July. Total gold and foreign assets increased by ZAR 6.68 billion to ZAR 1.224 trillion. The value of gold holdings rose by ZAR 18.59 billion to ZAR 289.88 billion, while foreign exchange reserves excluding special drawing rights fell by ZAR 9.27 billion and special drawing rights holdings declined by ZAR 2.65 billion. On the liability side, bank deposits increased by ZAR 6.70 billion and other deposits by ZAR 30.99 billion, partly offset by a ZAR 48.26 billion decline in the gold and foreign exchange contingency reserve account.
