The European Commission reported that EU prices for fuels and lubricants used in personal transport rose 23.8% in August 2026 from a year earlier, accelerating from annual increases of 13.7% in June and 16.9% in July. Prices increased in 26 of the 27 EU countries, with 18 recording rises above 20%. Bulgaria had the largest annual increase at 34.5%, while Hungary had the smallest at 1.3%. On a monthly basis, diesel prices rose 8.3% and petrol prices increased 3.3%. Diesel became more expensive in 26 countries, led by Czechia with a 14.3% increase. Petrol prices rose in 22 countries, led by Spain at 8.2%, declined slightly in three and were unchanged in two. The figures form part of Eurostat’s data collection for the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices.

The European Commission reported that EU transport fuel and lubricant prices rose 23.8% year on year in August 2026, with increases in 26 of 27 countries. From July, diesel prices climbed 8.3% and petrol prices rose 3.3%.
