The U.S. House Financial Services Committee is holding a markup of bills covering Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) oversight, consumer fraud, lending rules, housing finance and federal custody of digital assets. In prepared remarks for the markup, Chairman French Hill outlined proposals that would impose new accountability and transparency guardrails on the CFPB and require its civil investigative demands to have a factual basis, reasonable scope and meaningful review process. Other measures would allow state-chartered banks and credit unions to make loans nationwide under their home states’ interest rate rules, establish a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and separate Digital Asset Stockpile at the Treasury for forfeited assets, and coordinate government and private-sector efforts against financial scams. The committee is also considering bills that would temporarily remove a Federal Housing Administration financing restriction for qualified inpatient psychiatric hospitals for five years, simplify disclosures for annuity and life insurance products, and increase Federal Home Loan Banks’ mandatory contributions to their Affordable Housing Programs.
