The European Central Bank published its balance sheet as of Oct. 9, showing total assets and liabilities of EUR 5.944 trillion, down EUR 3.916 billion from the previous week due to transactions. The asset decline primarily reflected lower monetary policy securities holdings and reduced lending to euro area credit institutions, partly offset by an increase in other claims on those institutions. Securities held for monetary policy purposes fell EUR 14.712 billion to EUR 3.316 trillion, while monetary policy lending declined EUR 3.797 billion to EUR 34.300 billion, driven by main refinancing operations. Other claims on euro area credit institutions rose EUR 12.994 billion to EUR 43.151 billion. On the liability side, deposit facility balances decreased EUR 5.078 billion to EUR 1.955 trillion and euro-denominated liabilities to non-euro area residents fell EUR 8.253 billion, while other liabilities increased EUR 9.917 billion.
