The Central Bank of Venezuela has taken provisional custody of the historical archives of Simón Bolívar and Francisco de Miranda in a high-security joint operation, after a twin earthquake on June 24 damaged the facilities of the Ministry of Culture, the General Archive of the Nation and the National Library. The transfer covers archival materials from the Libertador Forum and is framed as a preventive contingency measure to protect documentary collections of national heritage value. Technical inspections by the relevant authorities found significant damage to the affected institutions’ infrastructure. The archives were therefore moved to the central bank for temporary safekeeping in a space described as having appropriate preservation conditions and maximum security.
