The Central Bank of Estonia published second-quarter cash data showing that the amount issued rose 39% from the previous quarter, reflecting the usual seasonal increase in demand. It issued 11.5 million banknotes worth EUR 357.8 million and 3.7 million coins worth EUR 3.1 million. The 50-euro note accounted for 45% of banknotes issued, while the two-euro coin represented 32% of coins. The central bank received 7.5 million banknotes worth EUR 238.2 million, up 19% by volume from the first quarter, and destroyed 0.95 million notes that were unfit for circulation. ATM users made 5.1 million cash withdrawals totaling EUR 922 million, with transaction numbers down about 10% from a year earlier. ATM deposits fell 5% year over year to EUR 459 million. Estonia had 668 ATMs at quarter-end, including 227 that accept deposits. Authorities detected 45 counterfeit euro banknotes, mainly 20- and 50-euro notes, and 26 counterfeit coins during the quarter.
