Mozambique's Ministry of Finance published remarks from Finance Minister Carla Loveira opening the 16th edition of the Bank of Mozambique’s Scientific Days, held under the theme “Capital Account Liberalization in Mozambique and the Challenges of Macroeconomic Management”. Loveira linked the topic to government economic policies aimed at improving the business environment for domestic firms and boosting national competitiveness. In her address, Loveira argued that capital account liberalization is important to attract resources that support economic growth and to improve market efficiency in ways that can promote employment and income generation, while avoiding risks to domestic economic stability. She said any liberalization should be gradual and carefully calibrated, taking into account Mozambique’s economic characteristics, the robustness of the financial system and the risks associated with volatile capital flows. Bank of Mozambique Governor Rogério Zandamela also noted the event coincided with the 45th anniversary of the Metical and the commemoration of the 1960 Mueda Massacre.
