The Central Bank of Luxembourg published provisional May 2026 balance sheet data for credit institutions showing total assets of EUR 1,033,311 million at May 31, down 0.34% from EUR 1,036,875 million at April 30. The monthly decline was driven mainly by lower claims on other banks and deposit-taking institutions on the asset side and lower liabilities to those institutions on the liability side. On an annual basis, the aggregate balance sheet increased 6.77%. The interbank balance, measured as the difference between interbank claims and liabilities, fell by EUR 8,152 million, or 3.59%, to EUR 218,864 million at end-May 2026. Loans to non-bank customers rose by EUR 287 million, or 0.24%, from April to May and were up EUR 7,569 million, or 6.63%, over 12 months. Over the year, lending to non-financial corporations increased by EUR 250 million, household mortgage lending rose by EUR 1,116 million and lending to other financial intermediaries increased by EUR 5,824 million. On the liability side, resident non-bank deposits fell by EUR 9,805 million, or 2.95%, between April and May, but were up EUR 14,473 million, or 4.70%, from a year earlier. Over the 12-month period, deposits from other financial intermediaries, which accounted for 68% of the total at May 31, 2026, increased by EUR 11,826 million and household deposits rose by EUR 2,468 million, while deposits from non-financial corporations fell by EUR 3,780 million. Deposits from other sectors, including general government, insurance corporations and pension funds, increased by EUR 3,959 million.
