The European Commission has launched an investment platform under the Trans-Mediterranean Renewable Energy and Clean Tech Cooperation Initiative (T-MED) to mobilize investment in renewable energy and clean technologies across the Mediterranean. EU support will include up to EUR 4.5 billion in guarantee capacity under the European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus to reduce investment risks and attract private capital. The platform will match projects with potential financing from financial institutions and investors. Investment areas include renewable electricity and hydrogen, electricity networks and interconnections, energy storage and clean technology manufacturing. Support beyond financing will address barriers involving regulatory frameworks, permitting, grid access and power purchase agreements. The platform will also support skills development and local clean technology value chains. Existing T-MED projects include a EUR 1.6 billion program to modernize and expand Egypt’s electricity grid, integrating solar and wind generation, and two solar plants in Tunisia with capacity of 100 megawatts each. The broader initiative, a flagship of the Pact for the Mediterranean, aims to mobilize up to EUR 25 billion in investment and train or upskill up to 10,000 workers by 2035.
