The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has launched a “Grievance Resolution Month” initiative for November 2026, asking insurers to accelerate resolution of pending policyholder grievances and disputes, particularly longstanding cases. The initiative focuses on fair and sustainable resolution rather than simply increasing the number of cases closed. As of March 31, 2026, approximately 221,000 cases were pending before Consumer Commissions and judicial courts, with about 72.49% outstanding for more than a year. Around 1.1 million cases were also reportedly pending before the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal. The backlog underscores the need for insurers to examine why grievances reach courts and other dispute resolution forums, alongside the outcomes of those proceedings. Insurers are advised to prioritize older cases, review litigation on its merits and pursue amicable settlements where legally and factually justified. They are also encouraged to comply promptly with Insurance Ombudsman awards, strengthen litigation management to avoid unnecessary delays and address recurring causes of grievances through corrective and preventive measures. IRDAI, the insurance councils and state lead insurers will organize outreach across the country, particularly in Tier II and Tier III cities where access to grievance redress is limited.
