The Croatian Financial Services Supervisory Agency (Hanfa) has renewed its warning about fraudsters impersonating its employees after receiving a significant number of reports from the public. Impersonators contact potential victims by telephone, email or social media, offering investment assistance or purported recovery of money lost to online or investment scams. People who transferred money for supposed recovery services have suffered further fraud. In some cases, the individuals offering recovery assistance may be the original perpetrators operating under different identities. Hanfa does not provide investment advice, investment assistance, brokerage or fund recovery services, and its employees do not contact the public to offer them. The warning urges people not to transfer money to anyone approaching them with such offers while claiming to be a Hanfa employee. Before investing, consumers should verify that providers are authorised to operate in Croatia by checking Hanfa’s register of investment firms or its register of notifications from European Union member states.
