The Central Bank of Iceland has revised the data sources and methodology for its market securities statistics and recalculated data from October 2023 onward. The changes alter securities coverage and the treatment of bonds and bills but exclude statistics on collective investment fund shares. For the recalculated period, securities data other than fund shares come from Nasdaq CSD and Iceland Securities Depository, replacing a mix of stock exchange, government debt and balance sheet sources. Coverage now reflects securities held or registered with the domestic depositories, regardless of where they were issued. By contrast, the previous stock exchange data covered the total issuance of securities with dual listings admitted to trading in Iceland, including holdings at foreign depositories. All bonds and bills are now reported net of issuers’ own holdings, a treatment previously limited to Treasury securities. Indexed Treasury securities now include accrued interest and indexation compensation, both previously excluded. Movements between September and October 2023 therefore reflect changes in data collection and methodology as well as actual changes in securities issuance and values.
