The Central Bank of Honduras (BCH) has clarified that its acquisition of 900 million banknotes in various denominations does not in itself expand currency issuance or create unbacked money. The purchase is a cash supply operation to meet demand and partly replace worn notes, without implying inflationary pressures. The bank’s board approved the acquisition on July 9, 2026. Banknote procurement is planned around projected cash demand, wear and international quality and security standards. Currency issuance growth slowed from 16.5% at the end of 2025 to 6.9% in September 2026, a moderation BCH attributed to its monetary policy measures.
