The National Bank of Moldova has warned of false information about the banking sector following a cyberattack targeting some digital public services. Banks manage customer accounts in protected systems separate from the affected public platforms. Knowing an international bank account number (IBAN) does not enable withdrawals or transfers, which require the bank’s verification and authorization procedures. Claims that obtaining an IBAN gives access to a person’s savings are therefore false. Existing regulations subject banks and payment service providers to mandatory minimum requirements for information security, information technology risk management and business continuity, including protection of customer data. Customers should base decisions on information confirmed by authorities and their banks. They should not disclose account passwords, PINs, card security codes or transaction confirmation codes, including to people claiming to represent a bank or public institution. Any such request should be checked directly with the bank through its official channels.
