The National Bank of Serbia (NBS) has reaffirmed protection for insured deposits following the decision to withdraw Alta banka’s license to protect its depositors and creditors. The wider banking sector has substantial capital and liquidity buffers and continues to provide services without interruption, distinguishing its position from the operational problems at the individual bank. Deposits covered by the statutory insurance scheme will be paid in full up to EUR 50,000 per depositor per bank, with the Republic of Serbia guaranteeing payment. The Deposit Insurance Agency has the necessary funds for payouts within the statutory time limit. Depositors will be informed of the bank handling payments and the procedures to follow. The NBS has instruments available to provide additional liquidity to banks if needed under its statutory powers. It also reiterated its commitment to maintaining the dinar’s stability against the euro, backed by high foreign exchange reserves, and will intervene in the foreign exchange market when needed to counter exchange rate pressures.
