The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) has outlined its programme for COP31, focusing on closing climate finance gaps and mobilizing investment in transition and adaptation. The conference will take place Nov. 9-20, 2026, in Antalya, Türkiye. Discussions will address barriers to investable climate projects, the alignment of financial institutions’ transition plans with national climate priorities, and financing for resilience. Transition finance sessions will examine how investment risks, policy uncertainty and limited access to suitable funding prevent companies, particularly in emerging markets, from turning transition ambitions into bankable projects. The Transformational Finance for Climate Group, which includes UNEP FI, will launch its COP31 position paper on Nov. 12 alongside discussions on investment barriers and capital mobilization. A Nov. 14 session will focus on harmonizing approaches to financial institutions’ transition planning, aligning plans with national climate targets and public sector goals, and developing practical financing mechanisms for key sectors. Adaptation discussions will explore how blended finance platforms led by countries can mobilize private capital and how better information on climate risks, adaptation needs and investment benefits can help overcome financing barriers. A Nov. 13 roundtable will examine how droughts, floods and water scarcity affect corporate operations and credit risk, and how financial institutions can integrate physical water risks into lending decisions.
