Malaysia’s Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Health announced the establishment of an independent board to oversee MediAsas ahead of its nationwide implementation at the end of January 2027. Established by the Joint Ministerial Committee on Private Healthcare Costs, the board will make decisions on the plan’s implementation, administration and performance, with responsibility for protecting public interests and supporting its sustainability. Professor Emeritus Norma Mansor will chair the board, which includes representatives of both ministries and Bank Negara Malaysia. A MediAsas Office operated by ProtectHealth Corporation will support its work. Previously announced Budget 2027 measures will support access to basic medical coverage, particularly for people with limited or no medical and health insurance or takaful coverage. Premiums or contributions for coverage purchased for individuals and their immediate families will qualify for income tax relief. An allocation of MYR 40 million will encourage coverage among employees of small and medium enterprises with fewer than 75 employees. Alongside MediAsas, reforms under the RESET Strategy include the development of a standardized billing framework for private hospitals, led by the Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia. The framework aims to make hospital charges clearer and more consistent, enabling patients to compare charges for commonly offered services.
