India's International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) has recognised operating leases of graphics processing units (GPUs) and connected data center equipment, including hybrids of operating and financial leases, as a financial product in GIFT IFSC. The recognition follows its Aug. 18, 2026, consultation and took effect on Oct. 29, 2026. It enables access to advanced computing infrastructure without large upfront investment in equipment for which India is fully dependent on imports, complementing public computing infrastructure. Coverage extends to general purpose GPUs, artificial intelligence accelerators, tensor and neural processing units, comparable accelerated computing technologies and AI systems at rack scale. Connected computing, storage, networking and power infrastructure, together with parts and accessories, qualifies where dedicated to and directly associated with GPUs. A Framework for Leasing Activity in IFSC, due shortly, will set the rules under which finance companies in GIFT IFSC can undertake leasing activities.
