The Central Bank of Samoa announced the official release of reprinted 50 and 100 tala banknotes on polymer substrate, effective 8 December 2025, as part of a move to improve note durability and security. The polymer series will retain the existing banknote designs adapted for polymer material, with upgraded security elements intended to support authentication and machine processing. The new notes will include tactile embossed security elements to improve identification for visually impaired users. Polymer notes will circulate alongside existing paper notes, which will remain legal tender and be gradually withdrawn through the normal circulation process; the central bank also highlighted expected environmental benefits from longer note lifespan and recyclability.
