The European Commission published data showing that more than EUR 1.2 trillion has been invested in sustainable activities in the European Union since 2021. The figures show growing use of the EU sustainable finance framework, with over EUR 320 billion invested in activities aligned with the EU Taxonomy in 2025 and increased issuance under the European Green Bond Standard in 2026. The EU Taxonomy classifies environmentally sustainable activities to help companies and investors identify eligible investments. Energy accounted for the largest share of Taxonomy-aligned investment in 2025, mainly driven by electricity providers. The framework channels investment into domestic renewable energy, electrification and other clean technologies, supporting reduced reliance on imported fossil fuels. Around EUR 60 billion in European Green Bonds has been issued since the voluntary standard began applying in December 2024. Issuance reached EUR 39 billion between Jan. 1 and Oct. 7, 2026, compared with EUR 21 billion in 2025. The standard covers bonds financing sustainable activities aligned with the Taxonomy. The Commission is continuing work to simplify the sustainable finance framework to make implementation easier.
