The Bank of Uganda has announced lower value limits for interbank cheques processed through the Automated Clearing House, effective 1 January 2027. The change reduces the maximum cheque values for Uganda shillings, USD, euro, GBP and KES, reflecting the central bank's observation of a steady decline in paper-based payment instruments and stronger consumer preference for digital financial services. The new limits are UGX 5 million from UGX 10 million, USD 1,375 from USD 2,750, EUR 1,125 from EUR 2,250, GBP 1,100 from GBP 2,200 and KES 150,000 from KES 300,000. Interbank cheques above those thresholds will not be honoured once the new limits take effect. The limits do not apply to intra-bank cheque payments where both the drawer and the payee hold accounts at the same institution. The notice also points users to alternatives including the Real Time Gross Settlement System, electronic funds transfers and mobile money.
