Japan's Ministry of Finance and Australian Treasury have established a Finance Ministerial Dialogue to coordinate responses to shared strategic economic challenges and support economic security, resilience, trade and investment. The nonbinding framework covers macroeconomic policy, energy and fuel security, secure supply chains, critical minerals and cooperation across the Indo-Pacific. The two authorities will deepen technical cooperation on foreign investment screening, including information sharing on investment trends and lessons from reforms. They will also explore coordinated support from public finance institutions, including the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and Export Finance Australia, for projects in energy, green industry, housing, critical minerals and digital infrastructure. International cooperation will include correspondent banking, financial crime capacity building in Pacific island countries and closer alignment in multilateral forums. The dialogue will be co-chaired by Japan's finance minister and Australia's treasurer and, in principle, held annually. The existing officials-level economic dialogue will support implementation. The memorandum takes effect upon signing for an initial five-year period and will renew for successive five-year periods unless either participant gives six months' written notice.
