The Securities and Exchange Board of India issued a public caution after noting multiple instances of fraudsters impersonating SEBI officials, offices and email IDs to send fabricated communications and demand payments purportedly on SEBI’s behalf. The alert covers scams using forged SEBI letterhead, logo and seal, including social media “notices” seeking payments for compliance services or penalty and fine amounts, and fake “certificates” claiming a fraudster’s bank account is a SEBI-supervised vendor or merchant account. SEBI directed investors to verify enforcement actions via its website (Home > Enforcement) and to make any online Order, Settlement or Recovery payments only through its payment gateway at https://siportal.sebi.gov.in/intermediary/AOPaymentGateway.html. It also pointed to the SEBI Directory for official contact details, reiterated that SEBI email communications come only from addresses ending “@sebi.gov.in”, and referenced its website for official office addresses, urging heightened caution with messages from non-“@sebi.gov.in” domains and with any requests for information or payment claimed to be on SEBI’s behalf.
