The Bulgarian National Bank published a status update on the withdrawal of Bulgarian lev banknotes and coins and the release of euro cash, stating that the process is being carried out under the current regulatory framework and approved operational plans. It also reiterated that the euro has been the sole legal tender in Bulgaria since 1 February 2026. As of 27 February 2026, BGN 3.9 billion in lev banknotes and coins remained outside the Bulgarian National Bank’s cash holdings, implying that 87% of the lev in circulation at the start of 2025 had been withdrawn. Net euro banknotes and coins in circulation exceeded EUR 7.5 billion, defined as the difference between euro cash withdrawn from and deposited with the Bulgarian National Bank.
