Bank Negara Malaysia has launched RENTAS+, an in-house, cloud-based enhancement to Malaysia’s real-time gross settlement system (RENTAS) that enables continuous interbank funds transfer and settlement 24/7, 365 days a year. BNM describes RENTAS as the first RTGS system in ASEAN to offer round-the-clock settlement. The expanded settlement window is intended to help financial institutions manage credit and settlement risks linked to rapidly growing retail instant payments, with daily retail payment transaction volume and value up 49% and 22% respectively since 2024. Under the new setup, DuitNow transactions (including fund transfers, QR payments and e-commerce payments) are settled on a gross basis, with Payments Network Malaysia transmitting transactions to RENTAS+ for settlement after each customer transaction completes, replacing the prior twice-daily deferred net settlement cycle. To support continuous settlement, BNM has also introduced a 24/7 automatic liquidity facility using repurchase agreements and sell and buy back agreements. BNM positioned RENTAS+ as a milestone in its multi-year modernisation plan for RENTAS, aimed at providing a secure, scalable and flexible settlement platform for future innovations.
