The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative has launched a new Forum for Insurance Transition guide to help insurers and reinsurers turn total balance sheet transition planning principles into practical, organization-wide action. The report focuses on linking underwriting and investment portfolios through credible transition plans and is intended to help firms move from high-level ambition to implementation as climate-related physical and transition risks increasingly affect markets, regulation and investment conditions. The guide is the fourth report in the Forum for Insurance Transition Transition Plan Project and translates the six Total Balance Sheet Principles into practical approaches for governance, strategic planning, risk management, underwriting and investment decisions, performance management and disclosure. A central concept is "cognitive consonance," described as a shared internal logic that aligns underwriting and investment decisions around the same transition objective without requiring identical approaches across business functions. The broader project is presented as insurance-specific guidance for developing, implementing and disclosing transition plans that reflect insurers' business models, geographies and regulatory contexts.
