The Bank of the Republic of Burundi has completed the migration of its Automated Transfer System (ATS) to the international ISO 20022 standard, marking a milestone in the modernisation of Burundi’s payments ecosystem. Banks and the RNP are scheduled to resume interbank operations in the new system from 6 February 2026. The central bank linked the change to the ongoing digitisation of Burundi’s financial sector under the country’s Vision 2040 and 2060, and to aligning the national payments ecosystem with the latest international standards to support integration with regional and international payment and settlement systems. The migration is intended to strengthen efficiency, security and interoperability across the national financial system and support increased financial inclusion.
