The Monetary Authority of Macao published the preliminary findings of the International Monetary Fund’s 2026 Article IV consultation. The IMF mission forecast economic growth of 3.3% in 2026 and broadly stable medium-term growth of about 3%, while assessing Macao’s financial system as sound overall and noting the government’s fiscal capacity and increasing diversification of financial activities. The IMF recognized progress toward appropriate economic diversification and identified opportunities from the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, links with Portuguese-speaking countries and the government’s Guidance Fund. It recommended improving the business environment and public-sector efficiency, strengthening public financial management, developing skilled workers, using digital and artificial intelligence technologies to raise productivity and investing further in climate-resilient infrastructure. The IMF will publish its detailed staff report within two months.
