European Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs announced that Piero Cipollone, a member of the European Central Bank Executive Board, will present an update to the committee on developments in the digital euro project on 8 April 2025. The exchange of views follows Mr Cipollone’s previous update to the committee in September 2024 and is expected to cover progress in the project’s current “preparation phase” and related policy choices. The preparation phase began in November 2023 and is set to run until November 2025. Work during this phase includes preparing a draft digital euro scheme rulebook, selecting potential providers for the digital euro platform and infrastructure, and carrying out further experimentation and stakeholder consultations focused on quality, security, privacy and usability. In parallel, the European Parliament and the Council are assessing the European Commission’s two legislative proposals for establishing the digital euro.
