The National Bank of the Republic of North Macedonia published payment statistics for the third quarter of 2024 showing a continued shift toward digital channels for initiating payments, with citizens increasingly using payment cards and mobile payment solutions for electronic credit transfers. Card transactions in domestic commerce made with cards issued by domestic payment service providers rose year on year by 10.2% in number and 13.6% in value, driven mainly by growth in e-commerce payments (29.2%) and POS terminal payments (8.8%). Payment orders initiated by citizens also increased, with transaction volumes up 9.9% and values up 22.2%, alongside a 50.2% rise in the number of transactions executed via mobile payment applications; mobile apps accounted for 65% of all electronically initiated payment orders. The release also includes data on payment transactions by legal entities in North Macedonia.
