Peru's Superintendence of Banking, Insurance and AFP (SBS) used the International Microfinance Seminar (SIM) Arequipa 2026 to set out priorities for the municipal savings and credit bank sector, calling for a rethink of traditional models and a faster digital transformation supported by innovation, technology and strategic partnerships, while strengthening corporate governance. The superintendent also framed the Open Finance System as a challenge and an opportunity for microfinance providers and indicated that the SBS expects to issue the first rules for an initial set of data to be shared in the second half of 2025. The remarks highlighted that wider access to customer information under open finance could improve risk assessment, broaden market reach and strengthen customer retention. Some municipal savings and credit banks are participating with financial institutions and public entities in SBS-led working groups covering the data to be shared, risk management, information security and governance as part of the implementation roadmap.
