The European Commission has launched a targeted consultation on implementing an effective right to be forgotten for cancer survivors across EU member states. The approach would prevent a past cancer diagnosis from being used to set the price or conditions of financial services, including life and health insurance and mortgages, after a defined period following the end of active treatment. Despite higher cancer survival rates, former patients can face financial access barriers years after treatment, and right to be forgotten protections remain unavailable in some member states. The consultation builds on work under Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, including discussions among cancer organizations, medical professionals and insurers that have not produced agreement on an EU code of conduct. Feedback from survivors, industry and other stakeholders will inform the Commission’s next steps.
