The International Monetary Fund has announced Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva’s intention to appoint Mateusz Szczurek as Director of the European Department, effective July 27, 2026. He will succeed Alfred Kammer, who is retiring from the Fund. The department leads the IMF’s work on economic policies and reforms across Europe, including policy advice, financial support, and technical assistance to member countries. Szczurek is currently a member of the management board and chief risk officer at BGK, Poland’s development bank. Earlier roles included serving as Poland’s Minister of Finance from 2013 to 2015, holding senior positions at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development from 2016 to 2024 on macroeconomic assessment, reform monitoring, and policy dialogue in European Union countries of operation, and serving on the inaugural European Fiscal Board.

The International Monetary Fund will appoint Mateusz Szczurek as Director of the European Department, effective 27 July 2026, succeeding Alfred Kammer, who is retiring.
