The Bank of Spain announced that the jury of the King of Spain Prize in Economics has awarded this year’s honor to Chilean economist Ricardo Caballero for his academic and research career. Caballero has been Ford International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 2000 and specializes in macroeconomics, finance and international economics. The jury highlighted his work on the global scarcity of safe assets, global imbalances, persistently low interest rates and risk-centric macroeconomics, a framework for analyzing financial crises, recessions and macroeconomic instability. Caballero’s research has received more than 40,000 academic citations. The biennial prize, which marks its 40th anniversary this year, carries an award of EUR 72,000.
