The advertisements are designed to trick users into providing credentials by scanning their Hong Kong identity cards in connection with purported lending. HKICL said the advertisements are not affiliated with HKICL or any of its business. It also said it does not operate any Facebook communication channel and does not usually contact individual members of the public proactively. The public was urged to treat suspicious Facebook advertisements, calls, websites and other communications with caution, protect personal information, and report suspected fraud to the Police.
