The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) announced that its free Life Insurance Policy Locator tool has helped consumers uncover more than USD 13 billion in benefits from life insurance policies and annuity contracts since launching in November 2016. Insurers have reported USD 13.18 billion in matched benefits through 31 August 2025, a USD 3 billion increase since 31 August 2024. The encrypted online portal has received more than 1.17 million policy search requests, resulting in over 611,000 reported matches. After a request is submitted, the requester receives an automated confirmation email; if a match is found and the requester is identified as the beneficiary, the relevant life insurer or annuity provider contacts them directly. Participating insurers access request information through a secure portal and are responsible for reporting matches to state or territory insurance departments via the NAIC tool; searches may take 90 business days or more, and requesters may receive no response if no match is found, they are not the beneficiary, or they lack legal authority to obtain the information.
