The Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC) issued a scam alert warning that fraudsters are creating lookalike websites impersonating ASIC Connect and ASIC’s main website to trick users into disclosing sensitive information, including personal details, passwords and payment information. The impersonation sites may use domain names that closely resemble legitimate ASIC addresses, mimic the look and feel of ASIC pages, and may include links to genuine ASIC content to appear credible; some have also displayed fake search results for non-existent companies. ASIC urged users to verify they are using asic.gov.au, connectonline.asic.gov.au or asicconnect.asic.gov.au before entering any information, and to report suspected impersonation sites via an online inquiry (with details and/or screenshots), which ASIC will review and follow up on if further information is needed. For suspected victims, the guidance includes stopping further payments, contacting their bank or financial institution to halt transactions, and reporting the scam to relevant channels including Scamwatch.
