The European Commission has profiled ICEYE as an example of Horizon funding supporting European technology companies. Founded by Rafał Modrzewski and Pekka Laurila, the company used funding received in 2015 to develop a synthetic aperture radar satellite weighing less than 100 kilograms and now operates the world’s largest constellation of such satellites. ICEYE employs more than 1,000 people and provides frequent, all-weather satellite imagery for security, defense and intelligence, environmental monitoring, insurance and emergency response. Its data supports threat assessment and helps governments, emergency services and insurers evaluate building-level damage from floods, wildfires and other disasters. The company also participates in ongoing Horizon-funded civil security research, including a microsatellite radar network for Arctic ice surveillance.
