The Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA) published remarks by Insurance Commissioner Dr. Baghayo Saqware delivered at the Insurance Innovation Showcase organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with TIRA in Dar es Salaam, highlighting the role of innovation in expanding inclusive insurance. The Commissioner positioned TIRA as enforcing laws, regulations and guidelines to steer the market while welcoming innovations intended to strengthen inclusiveness and broaden access. The showcase brought together innovators competing across three areas: multi-cover insurance for small and medium-sized enterprises, health insurance solutions, and insurance solutions addressing the effects of climate change. Justin Kashaigili of Twende Tech won the overall competition with “Twende Bima”, a product aimed at enabling motorcycle riders (bodaboda) to access health insurance, while UNDP signalled continued collaboration with sector stakeholders and participation in research to support market growth.
